Sleep. Sweat. Slay

One woman's journey towards fitness, wellness and general fabulousness

Sleep Sweat Slay is a place to discuss wellness, fitness, positivity, motivation, confidence, self-image, self-improvement and self-care.

I’m not a nutritionist, life coach, bikini model or personal trainer. I don’t have a six-pack or a fridge neatly stacked with identical plastic lunchboxes filled with neatly chopped broccoli and tofu (I do have a freezer messily crammed full of plastic bags of roughly chopped veg that jump out at me whenever I open the door). My wellbeing regime involves daily medication, almost-daily meditation and lots of Britney Spears. In terms of inspirational mantras, I’m more likely to quote RuPaul than Eckhart Tolle.

I’m just an ordinary-ish woman – a 31 year old ginger vegetarian high-functioning perfectionist hypochondriac taking baby steps each day towards greater confidence and contentment.

(N.B. – I am not always this zen. As anyone who knows me even moderately well will recognise, I am:

1) sensitive

2) a chronic over-thinker

3) more than a little bit feisty, if we're being completely honest – and we are.

... so I don't always find it easy to bounce ba...

‘Thinking your way out of problems with your mind is not terribly effective. It’s like trying to run until your broken leg feels better.’ John Moe, The Hilarious World of Depression

When you have a mental health condition, it’s easy to think of your brain as the only or...

"Which side of the road do we drive on in this country?"

"Are you this sarcastic with all your students?" I asked my dear mother.

"Normally I just say 'Bonjour!'"

I do like to use that one on my driver friends. I also enjoy "If it was a boat, I would've fallen in", when s...

If you’re someone who struggles with anxiety and low self-esteem, having a group of writers – including published authors, popular poets and writers with PhDs – going through one of your incredibly personal short stories in fine detail can be nerve-wracking. For me, it...

About three years ago I developed sciatica – a condition where the sciatic nerve, which runs from your hips to your feet, is irritated. You can experience it as a pain, numbness or weakness in your hip, leg, foot or bum (it’s ce...
